DepEd learning module contains vulgar word ‘makak*ntot’

Department of Education Undersecretary Tony Umali revealed they found 155 errors in learning materials, including the word “makak*ntot,” which is a vulgar Filipino word for sex.

Umali said this error was found in learning modules for Grade 10 students in Pampanga.

The DepEd official said the module was recalled in February.

Meanwhile, DepED Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio reported to the House of Representatives that there were 163 errors in learning materials from October 2020 to June 2021. However, the number decreased to 155 after validation.

He added DepEd has also released notes to teachers to resolve these mistakes. Over 20 of these errors came from unknown sources, he also said.

“Hindi po ‘yan ma-locate, wala pong nakapagpapakita sa amin na nasa DepEd ‘yan o ginawa ‘yan ng DepEd,” San Antonio told the House Committee on Public Accounts.

AAMBIS-OWA party-list Representative Sharon Garin said these errors were disappointing.

“One topic I’m particular about is ‘yung unknown sources. How did it happen? ‘Di ba nakakatakot ‘yan, nakakalusot ‘yan and hindi niyo alam saan nanggaling,” Garin said.

DepEd learning module contains vulgar word ‘makak*ntot’

In March, a Grade 5 student from , South Cotabato, received praise from netizens when his father posted his letter to the Department of Education (DepEd) due to the alleged gender bias in his learning module.

In the photo uploaded by Michael Jess Lapid, the child’s father, activity in the module can be seen where a child must match some descriptions to the boy and girl.

Based on the picture of the answer key, it is said that the correct portrayal of the man is cool, strong, and brave while a woman should be a crybaby, modest, and has mood swings — something that Miguel did not agree with.

In a letter written by Miguel for DepEd, he said that the “stereotyping” and “bias” of the answer can hurt others.

Most of the students in public schools are learning under distance education or through modules due to the pandemic.
