Davao City’s mayor Rodrigo Duterte is known for being tough on crime – and he now backs the idea of reinstating the death penalty.
Mayor Duterte proposed the death penalty saying that those caught for kidnapping, drug dealing and other serious crimes should be hanged.
The story went viral after an Indian went missing and was later located. The four suspects who took the Indian moneylender were also from the same country and attempted to hold the businessman for ransom.
Police are still looking for six other people who were allegedly part of the kidnapping extortion attempt. Originally the ransom was set at 20 million pesos but was later reduced to 200,000.
