Footage has emerged of a man wearing headphones obliviously riding his bicycle into the path of an oncoming train.

Patrick De Dios, a 31-year-old father of four, was killed on the spot in Santa Rosa, Laguna.

Management at the Philippine National Railways have offered to provide assistance to Mr De Dios’ grieving family.

The railway line through Santa Rosa is one of the functional sections of the Bicol Express, which once connected Manila to Legaspi City.

It is not clear if there are any plans to restore the line. Under the title ‘Bicol Express News’, the PNR’s website simply says: “Manila Bicol trips are currently suspended. Please bear with us.”

The train line also lent its name to a spicy pork dish. It is said that Mrs Cely Kalaw invented the recipe at her restaurant in Malate, Manila, in the 60s.

Once she had perfected it, she was still at a loss about what to call it. At that point she heard the daily Bicol train rumble past her window and had a lightbulb moment, and Bicol Express was born.
