Suspected New People’s Army guerillas staged a series of attacks in the hills on the border of Davao City, taking with them at least five policeman as hostages including a senior official.

The attack came after NPA rebels harassed a government militia detachment in Sitio quiman-anao, Barangay Salapawan in Paquibato District, Davao City.

The 60+ heavily armed rebels are believed to be member of the 1st Pulang Bagani Company of the NPA, that faction is led by Commander Jinggoy.

The fight between the two factions lasted over an hour when rebels overran the detachment and seized M14 rifles, Garand rifles, M16, grenades, thousands of rounds of ammunition and other unknown items.

A militiaman and a civilian were both wounded, the civilian was shot in the shoulder and could have been hit by crossfire as he was not part of the unit.

A group of policemen were on hot pursuit to rescue the hostages when they were attacked by another group of NPA rebels in Sitio Singko, Barangay Mapula.

In this attack the driver was left behind but the rebels took 5 police officers. Those five include Leonardo Tarongoy, Rosenie Cabuenas, Rodulfh Paceta, Abdul Azis Ali, and Neil Arellano.

Both the military and police immediately deployed other units into the area.
