A New Year’s Eve reveller at a top Manila club spent an eye-watering seven million pesos on a bottle of Champagne.
Cove Manila, a recently opened ‘indoor beach club’ announced the purchase of the 30-litre bottle of Armand de Brignac Midas with a video (see below).
The buyer of the bottle — which cost the equivalent of $140,000 — could have instead used the cash to buy this townhouse in Quezon City, or this high-end condominium.
They could even have used the cash to help the poorest of society over the holiday season.
In a caption on the video announcement, the management of Cove wrote: “We just sold the first seven million peso Armand de Brignac Midas in the Philippines!
“Another night in history was made when the prestigious 30-litre bottle was purchased right as we were counting down to 2018!
“The only one of its kind in the country sold first at Cove Manila! Cheers to festive and grand celebrations, we can’t wait to pop more bottles with all of you this year.”
According to Wine Enthusiast Magazine, American billionaire and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban once spent a measly $110,000 — or 5.5 million pesos — on a similar bottle of plonk.
The bizarrely overpriced Champagne became available at the Manila club last month through a partnership with Armand de Brignac, which was bought by rapper Jay-Z in 2014.
According to a report on GMA News, the drink’s price tag is due to the “meticulous winemaking process”.
The article said: “Only 18 people touch a bottle — from the pressing of the fruit to the champagne’s departure from France, to the finished each bottle receives. We like to take time and nurture our champagne.”
For those with more limited means, a standard 750ml bottle of the brand’s Brut Gold cuvée is offered by Cove for the bargain price of 45,000 pesos.
Other varieties include Rosé, Demi-Sec, Blanc de Blancs, and Blanc de Noirs.
