Cavite checkpoints removed; cops focused on enforcing health protocols

Police checkpoints in Cavite have been dismantled to focus on law enforcement and enforcement of other health protocols, according to Gov. Jonvic Remulla.

“Kung inyong mapapansin ay tinanggal na ng [Philippine National Police] ang mga checkpoint na talaga namang nagiging sanhi ng malubhang traffic,” said Remulla on a Facebook page on Tuesday.

According to Remulla, the police will only focus on “appropriate things” such as visiting public vehicles for overcrowding, monitoring those who roam and litter the streets, and enforce the curfew and anti-drunk driving law.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government had earlier ordered the laying down of border controls as part of the crackdown on COVID-19.

Although Cavite is one of the provinces with high COVID-19 cases, Remulla said the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in the province is sufficient instead of the more stringent ECQ.

If Cavite is added to the ECQ, the assistance provided by the national government will not be enough, said Remulla.

The governor added that up to P1 billion will also be lost to Cavite’s economy per day if it is put in the ECQ.

Meanwhile, in Bacoor City, a compound in Barangay Molino II was locked down, where authorized persons outside residence (APOR) will also not be identified.

According to the local government’s executive order (EO), the Zaragosa compound was locked down from August 9 to 22 after 5 confirmed cases of COVID-19 were recorded and 2 others tested positive in the antigen test.

Confirmed cases have been transferred to the isolation facility.

About 200 individuals were affected by the lockdown who will be given relief goods.

The city hall strongly ordered that even APORs not leave the house in the Zaragosa compound, and only barangay personnel will take or buy the needs of the residents.

“No one, not even APOR, in the whole Zaragosa compound maybe allowed to go out of the house,” EO said.

The EO stressed that those who violate the lockdown would be punished accordingly.
