Sex abuse scandals within the Catholic Church have now cost the Vatican $3,994,797,060.10, nearly $4 billion since the 1950s.
The National Catholic Reporter added up the final count and posted the information on its website.
The research did not touch on how much was spent on therapy for victims, help for the offenders and the creation of ‘safe environment’ programmes.
The investigation took three months to conclude, covering almost 8,000 published articles as well as information from BishopAccountability.org along with reports from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.
Adding the onslaught of lost memberships and donations to the church, the estimated cost of the sex abuse scandal could easily skyrocket into multi-billions.
