Carina brings flood, minor landslide in northern Philippine provinces

Tropical Depression Carina did not make landfall, but it brought heavy rains and strong winds to many areas in the northern Philippines, causing minor flooding and a small landslide.

Bam Alegre reported on Unang Balita Tuesday that some areas in Aparri, Cagayan were flooded.

In Ilagan, Isabela, however, farmers welcomed the rain. One of them, Florencio Cadiente, said: “Nagpapasalamat kami sa ulan kasi magtatanim kami ng play.”

Bontoc, Mountain Province also experienced heavy rains.

Meanwhile, GMA News stringer Dennis Alipio reported a landslide that occurred on the main road in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, due to the bad weather.

Tropical Depression Carina updates

According to the severe weather bulletin of Pagasa issued 8 am, Tuesday, Carina moves past the Balintang Channel and is now approaching the Bashi Channel.

At 7:00 AM today, the center of Tropical Depression “CARINA” was estimated based on all available data at 95 km West Northwest of Basco, Batanes (20.7 °N, 121.1 °E )

It was moving Northwestward at 25 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 55 km/h.

Tropical Depression Carina is forecast to turn northward while heading towards the Bashi Channel and the southern portion of Taiwan. It is forecast to weaken into a Low Pressure Area today or tomorrow morning.

Scattered light to moderate rains with at times heavy rain showers over Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Ilocos Norte

Flooding and rain-induced landslides may occur during heavy or prolonged rainfall especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards. The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices are advised to take appropriate measures and monitor the Rainfall or Thunderstorm Advisories or Heavy Rainfall Warnings of PAGASA Regional Services Divisions.

Moderate to rough seas (1.2-3.1 m) will be experienced over the seaboards of Northern Luzon in the next 24 hours. Those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out to sea.

It’s forecast position is: 24 Hour (Tomorrow morning): 325 km North Northwest of Basco, Batanes(23.3°N, 121.3°E)

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal no. 1 remains in the province of Batanes.
