Bus kills traffic enforcer assisting elderly pedestrian in EDSA

A traffic enforcer was killed on Tuesday after being hit by a bus while helping an elderly commuter cross the EDSA.

According to a report by Mark Salazar in “24 Oras” on Wednesday, Field Enforcer George Banez was guiding a senior citizen in the North EDSA area when he was hit by a Joanna Jesh Transport bus.

First responders tried to revive the victim before being rushed to the hospital, but he also died later.

The older commuter assisted by Banez was not hurt.

The bus driver identified as Nolan De Villa only ran over the hit traffic enforcer.

According to the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic (IACT), the suspect has surrendered to the authorities.

Joanna Jesh Transport will face an investigation on November 27.

De Villa’s license was suspended for 90 days.

“For IACT’s part, we have already sent a letter to LTFRB, to Chairman [Martin] Delgra asking na masuspinde ang fleet ng Joanna Jesh because of this accident,” said IACT legal officer Atty. Roberto Carpella.

The victim is just a new traffic enforcer who has a job order at IACT.

Banez has accident and death insurance from the agency.

“Aside from that, we will be extending whatever legal assistance para ma-obtain ‘yung possible filing ng civil and criminal cases against the erring bus driver and ‘yung employer niya,” said Carpella.

Also, Joanna Jesh Transport is in direct contact with the victim’s family.

“Pagka kasi ‘yung family ay nag-execute na ng quit claim, in as much as we want to pursue this criminally, baka mahirapan na kami,” said.

The Joanna Jesh Transport has not issued a statement regarding the incident as of this writing.

Meanwhile, a drug suspect was arrested in Mandaluyong after the police apprehended him for not wearing a face mask on Wednesday.

The suspect, Genaro Ledesma, allegedly ran away when the police called his attention.

An unlicensed gun and suspected shabu with a street value of more than P10,000 were confiscated from him during the chase.

On the other hand, Ledesma denied that he had committed a violation and said that his arrest may be related to his fight with a barangay official who was allegedly harassed by him.
