Boracay Island is about to receive a major upgrade to its water problem by mid-2015. Boracay Water has started the Nabaoy Transmission Line, aimed at increasing water supply capacities throughout the island.

The 86 million peso project includes construction of a five-and-a-half kilometre stretch of pipe connecting Nabaoy River to the Caticlan Water Treatment Plant. The project will increase water capacity by 5.5 million litres per day – reaching a capacity of 20 million litres in all.

It is expected to meet the increasing water demand of Boracay, due to the growing number of tourists over recent years. The water will also meet the demands of resorts and housing which have inundated the popular island.

Current estimates by the Department of Tourism say that a 22 per cent increase in tourism will come to the popular beach spot, that increase will mean that almost two million people will visit the island this year alone.

Boracay Water, a company formed through the partnership of Manila Water and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority in 2009, provides water and used water services in Boracay, Malay, Aklan, particularly in its three barangays – Manocmanoc, Balabag, and Yapak.
