BI Mindanao ops arrest Korean fugitive

Bureau of Immigration (BI) operatives arrested on Saturday, a Korean fugitive, wanted in his country for fraud.

In a report from Intelligence Officer Melody Penelope Gonzales, elements from the BI Mindanao Intelligence Task Group (MITG), in coordination with the National Bureau of Investigation XI-South Eastern Mindanao Regional Office, arrested 61-year-old Lee Sanghun in a restaurant in Calinan District, Davao City.

Lee is subject of a manhunt of the BI’s Intelligence Division upon receiving information of his crimes from Korean authorities in July.

His name is included in the Interpol wanted list, and is tagged as a fugitive wanted for prosecution. Lee has a standing arrest warrant issued in 2020 by the Gunsan Branch, Jeonju District Court of South Korea.

Lee was said to have defrauded a bank a total of 350 million won, equivalent to 15.2 million pesos, on 11 separate occasions from 1998 to 1999. In addition, he allegedly took profit by borrowing more than a billion won, or 43 million pesos, from two other fraud cases, in violation of Korea’s Criminal Act 347-(1).

He is also linked to illegal online gambling activities in the country, and has pursued mining activities in Davao City.

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente lauded the arrest by the BI MITG.

“He has been in the country since 1999 and is already an undocumented and overstaying alien,” said Morente. “As a fugitive, he is considered an undesirable alien, and will be immediately deported and blacklisted from our country,” he added.

Meanwhile, BI has deported a South Korean fugitive, wanted by authorities in his country, for illegally operating an online gambling site on the .

BI Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the deportee as 44-year-old Park Junyoung, who was flown back to his country last Saturday, aboard a Jeju Air flight bound for Incheon, Seoul that left the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA).

Morente said the South Korean was expelled pursuant to a summary  order that the BI Board of Commissioners issued against him two years ago for being an undesirable alien, and violating the conditions of his stay in the country.

“He is now in the custody of authorities in South Korea where he is wanted to stand trial for his alleged crimes. We have also placed him in our blacklist to prevent him from re-entering the Philippines,” the BI Chief added.
