BI agents nab 2 Korean fugitives wanted for telco fraud in back-to-back ops

Bureau of Immigration (BI) operatives arrested two South Koreans wanted by authorities in their country for swindling their compatriots of large amounts of money through telecommunications fraud.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the apprehended alien fugitives as Han Juyoung and Kim Sihun, both 26 years old, who were arrested in Taguig City last Wednesday in separate operations conducted by elements from the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU).

Morente said both Han and Kim will be sent back to South Korea immediately as an order for their summary deportation order was already issued by the BI Board of Commissioners last year.

“As a result of the deportation order, their names are placed in our immigration blacklist, thus they are perpetually barred from re-entering the Philippines for being undesirable aliens,” Morente added.

According to BI-FSU Acting Chief Rendel Ryan Sy, Han and Kim are also subject of red notices issued by the Interpol to all law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Sy said the duo is wanted for allegedly defrauding his victims of over 29 million won, or roughly US$25,000, through voice phishing operations wherein they impersonated agents of a financial institution that offered low interest payment on loans to borrowers.

Warrants for their arrest were reportedly issued by the Seoul Central District in May 2020 after they were indicted on charges of fraud.

Sy also bared that the two fugitives are already undocumented aliens as their passports were cancelled by the South Korean government.

They will be detained at the BI Warden Facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City pending their deportation.

Meanwhile, BI vowed to continue its transparency as it was cited for the third year in a row for championing Freedom of Information (FOI).

The BI was recognized for being one of the top requested and top performing agencies that acted on 250 to 499 requests, and resolved at least 90 percent of requests for information from the general public inquiring via the ’s eFOI portal.
