Baguio City reaches record-high COVID-19 cases

The number of new COVID-19 cases in Baguio City on Thursday was record-high.

In a post on their Facebook page, the local government reported that 725 new cases were recorded in their city on January 20.

There are now 4,125 active COVID-19 cases in Baguio City or the so-called “Summer Capital of the Philippines.”

In an interview with TeleRadyo, Mayor Benjamin Magalong said most of these patients show only mild symptoms.

“Kung titingnan mo yung general na active cases namin, at nasa 4,200 na kami. Lumalabas na almost 90 percent plus ang aming mild and asymptomatic cases and moderate cases,” he said.

According to the mayor, the healthcare capacity utilization rate in Baguio City is at 65%.

“Lumalabas na karamihan ng aming mga pasyente sa hospital are moderate…almost 65 percent are moderate and mild, tapos 30 percent yung severe.”

“Kaya nagkakaroon kami ng mga mild na cases sa hospital dahil, unang-una marami sa kanilang may comorbidities gaya ng diabetic, hypertension, heart diseases, cancer tapos nagkakaroon sila ng mga mild cases dahil nga may booster na sila,” the mayor explained.

According to Magalong, most of the severe cases of COVID-19 in the city are not vaccinated.

Meanwhile, Magalong also said that starting this Friday, the movement of minors in Baguio will be limited.

He said they will only be allowed in outdoor spaces in the city until the end of the month.

“Nagbigay ako ng executive order nung isang araw, it will take effect on 21 January, na ire-restrict na namin yung movement ng mga 11 year old and below, and unvaccinated 12-17. Irerestrict na lang namin sila sa, doon na lang sila pwede pumunta sa mga parks, sa mga gardens, hiking na lang.”

“Pero doon sa mga, yung closed spaces like for example mga malls, mga restaurants, indoor restaurants pinagbabawal na namin sila. That will be for 10 days, 21-31 January,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malacañang announced Kalinga, Ifugao, Mountain Province, and Northern Samar would be under the stricter Covid-19 Alert Level 4 starting January 21.

“The Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) approved on Thursday, January 20, 2022, the escalation of Kalinga, Ifugao, and Mountain Province in the Cordillera Administrative Region, as well as the province of Northern Samar, to Alert Level 4,” it said in a statement.
