Austrian woman drowns in rafting accident in Mountain Province

An Austrian woman drowned in the Chico River in Bontoc, Mountain Province, on Tuesday morning.

A report on the incident showed that the raft was carrying six tourists, including Judith Kiesl, as well as a local guide.

The raft they were traveling in tilted over after hitting a rock, Kiesel and another foreigner went missing for almost half an hour. They were discovered in calmer waters on the river and rushed to Bontoc General Hospital where Kiesl was pronounced dead on arrival.

Some of the other tourists in the raft are being treated at Bontoc General Hospital.

The mayor of Sagada, James Pooten, said the group were all registered in his town. The municipal tourism officer of Sagada said he was attempting to contact the Austrian Embassy for the immediate repatriation of Ms Kiesel’s remains.
