Australian Hilton Munro was found dead in his jail cell in Cebu City last week.
The 46-year-old was arrested in a Cebu resort in 2013 for a string of child sex offences. Munro was found hanging from the metal rails of his isolation cell at Cebu Provincial Jail, he is said to have used a cotton blanket to hang himself with.
Munro, a former hockey player and private school teacher from Melbourne, Australia, was facing five counts of human trafficking and the violation of special laws that protect children within the Philippines (the specific offences have not been revealed).
The Australian was arrested in Stakili resort in Compostela, Cebu with five underage boys in his company. The cabin they were staying in was raided by police and Munro has been in jail awaiting trial since then.
A guard for the jail said that no one ever came to visit Munro during his time in jail, but he had been in contact with his parents in Australia.
Munro was said to have occupied a cell by himself and was transferred to an isolation cell last year after he became unruly.
A handwritten letter was found after security personnel found Munro hanging in his cell.
