A PMA cadet was found dead at the academy’s swimming pool on Friday, November 8.
The victim was identified as Cadet Fourth Class Mario Telan Jr., a classmate Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio who died of hazing at the Philippine Military Academy on September 18.
The classmates of the PMA cadet found him dead, 15 feet under the academy’s swimming pool at 2:44 pm. They began searching for Telan when he failed to attend his swimming class at 11 am, said PMA spokesperson Capt. Cheryl Tindog. His belongings were found in the pool’s comfort room.
The cadet was declared dead on arrival at Fort del Pilar Station Hospital.
“Efforts were done to revive him, and he was immediately transferred to Fort del Pilar Station Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician,” Tindog said.
The Philippine National Police is investigating the incident to determine if there is a foul play or if it is an accidental drowning.
“All needed actions and protocols are being undertaken to deal with any infraction and/or irregularity. Likewise, all swimming classes of the cadets are temporarily halted until such time that the incident has been properly addressed,” Tindog explained.
“PMA deeply grieves for this unfortunate loss of one of our sons. All necessary assistance will be extended to the bereaved family and loved ones,” PMA added.
On September 20, Philippine Military Academy officials confirmed the PMA Cadet Fourth Class Darwin Dormitorio died of hazing.
Dormitorio suffered “24 hours of hell” from the hands of his upperclassmen.
