An American woman is the second confirmed person to test positive for the Zika virus while visiting the Philippines in January of this year.
The Philippines Department of Health said Sunday that the woman who came to the Philippines for four weeks in January, returned to the US and has tested positive for the mosquito borne virus.
In a press release, DOH said the woman is not pregnant – and is the second person who tested positive to the Zika virus, but is the first foreigner/visitor to contract the virus.
The first reported case of the Zika virus was in 2012 when a 15-year-old boy from Cebu tested positive.
The Department of Health is now closely coordinating with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to map out the places she visited while in the Philippines from January 2-26.
So far authorities noted that the American had only travelled in the Luzon region of the Philippines, and had developed a fever, rash, joint and muscle pain and conjunctivitis during her last week in the country.
