An American has been arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Davao City under a warrant of arrest from the United States.

57-year-old Jeffrey Wayne Burge (aka Birge) was arrested at his home in Woodridge Subdivision, in Davao City last week by members of the Fugitive Search Unit of the BI.

BI commissioner Jaime Morente said the American will be deported as an undesirable alien and for being undocumented due to the cancellation of his passport by the State Department.

He said: “There will be no let-up in our drive to flush out foreign fugitives. We will not allow our country to be used as a sanctuary for wanted criminals.”

Authorities said Burge was set to stand trial in Tarrant County, Texas, after a warrant for his arrest was issued on October 30, 2014, shortly after an indictment on charges of sexual assault of a child.

Burge was to be transported from Davao City to Manila after his arrest, but the trip was postponed due to unspecified medical conditions.

BI officials said Burge was currently confined at a hospital in Davao where he was brought to on the advice of his attending physician.

Authorities said they would eventually transfer him to Bicutan, Taguig City where he would be detained until he deported back to the United States.
