Active COVID-19 cases in Laguna reach 3,000: gov

The number of active COVID-19 cases or still sick in Laguna has jumped to 3,000, Governor Ramil Hernandez said this Sunday.

In an interview with TeleRadyo, Hernandez said that of the 3,000 active cases, 26 were cases of the more contagious Delta variant of the virus.

He said this is one of the reasons why the province was subjected to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), the strictest lockdown status, until mid-August.

According to Hernandez, the enforcement of health protocols is now stricter, and they have also added a police force.

“Sa atin pong mga kapulisan, mahigpit po talaga nating pinatutupad at pinag-uutos na ipatupad ang lahat ng protocol,” said Laguna governor Hernandez.

The vaccination campaign in the province has also been intensified “that’s why we really have a problem with the supply of vaccine,” said the governor.

Only up to 10 percent of the target population is being vaccinated against COVID-19 in the province.

According to Hernandez, they are just waiting for the funds to be given to them to assist residents affected by ECQ.

Despite this, the provincial government is already distributing relief goods.

Quarantine status has been tightened again in some parts of the country, including Metro Manila, due to the kick-off of COVID-19 cases suspected to be triggered by the Delta variant.

Meanwhile, the impact of the Delta variant is already being felt in the Philippines, according to a Department of Health (DOH) official, in the face of the re-recording of more than 10,000 cases in recent days.

More than 8,000 new cases have been reported in recent days, and on Friday and Saturday, more than 10,000 people have tested positive for the virus.

According to the DOH, these cases are likely to rise further.

“Nararamdaman na po natin ang epekto ng Delta variant dito po sa ating bansa. At amin pong nakikita, based also on projections, na tataas pa rin po ang mga kasong ito,” said Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.
