80-year-old man detained for stealing 10 kilos of mangoes

Authorities arrested an 80-year-old man for allegedly stealing 10 kilos of mangoes in Asingan, Pangasinan, on January 13, 2022.

According to the Asingan Public Information Office, the grandfather was arrested on a warrant in Barangay Bantog on Thursday, January 13.

The warrant was issued on December 20, 2021, by the 7th Municipal Circuit Trial Courts, Asingan-San Manuel.

But in an interview with Asingan PIO, the grandfather insisted that he pick mangoes from the tree that he planted, but the complainant just fenced it off.

“Impaburas ko maysa poon ti mangga. Awan pay 10 kilos, ti ammok sakop mi. Idi inaladan dan sinakop da met, mula mi met dadiay, idi nangalad da sinakop da,” he told the PIO.

(I picked that one mango tree. Less than 10 kilos, all I know is that it’s part of our property. When they fenced it, they covered it, but I planted it.)

He added that he just wanted to settle the case and said he also tried to pay the value of the mangoes.

“Ti kayat ko kuma ke areglo kuman, dadiay met batet met nga banag. Idi ited ko iti bayad na di na kayat nga awaten, ti imbaga na bayadak kano ti sais mil,” the elderly said.

(I would have liked to settle. It’s just a small thing. When I gave the payment, they didn’t want to accept it. They said I would pay P6,000.)

The 80-year-old remains at the Asingan Municipal Police Station while he has not yet posted bail in the P6,000 set by the court.

In June 2020, a similar incident occurred after the police arrested a 71-year-old jeepney driver who belonged to the “PISTON 6.”

Elmer Cordero, 72, remained in jail after he was not allowed to post bail because of an existing estafa case filed against him in 2020 when he failed to pay his house rent.

However, in 2018, Imelda Marcos, the wife of dictator Ferdinand Marcos was found guilty of graft but did not spend any time in jail. Instead, she posted P300,000 bail to enjoy temporary freedom post-conviction.
