Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Surigao del Sur


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a magnitude 6.1 hit del Sur on Monday morning.

The earthquake occurred at 6:13 am and its epicenter was located at 09.27°N, 126.80°E – 066 km N 60° E of the municipality of Bayabas.


The tectonic quake had a depth of focus of 77 km.

PHIVOLCS said no damages are expected from the earthquake but aftershocks may occur.

A magnitude 5.3 aftershock did occur at 6:21 am with epicenter at 09.35°N, 127.04°E – 093 km N 63° E of the municipality of Bayabas.


Meanwhile, Pagasa severe weather bulletin reported Tropical Depression Marce slightly intensified and is currently almost stationary.

At 10:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Depression “MARCE” was estimated based on all available data at 1,285 km East Northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon (24.2 °N, 133.8 °E ).

It is moving almost stationary with maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 70 km/h.

Magnitude 6.1 earthquake hits Surigao del Sur

This tropical cyclone is not expected to affect any land area or coastal waters of the country.

Marce has been almost stationary for the past six hours. On the forecast track, it will slowly move generally northward tonight before turning north-northeastward tomorrow while slightly accelerating. It is forecast to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) tomorrow morning or early afternoon.

Marce is forecast to remain a tropical depression throughout its lifespan, although intensification to a weak tropical storm is not ruled out. It is forecast to transition into an extratropical low on Tuesday.

Its forecast position are: 24 Hour(Tomorrow evening): 1,370 km East Northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon (OUTSIDE PAR)(26.1 °N, 133.9 °E); 48 Hour(Tuesday evening):1,530 km Northeast of Extreme Northern Luzon (OUTSIDE PAR)( 28.4 °N, 134.3 °E)

Meanwhile, at 3 a.m., the LPA was located 75 km northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar. It is not expected to intensify and may in fact dissolve on Tuesday, PAGASA weather specialist Aldczar Aurelio said.

Coastal waters will be slight to moderate in Luzon and Visayas, and slight in Mindanao. Sunrise will be at 5:45 a.m. while sunset will be at 5:53 p.m.
