30 undocumented Indian nationals chase BI agents with machetes

Thirty alleged undocumented Indian nationals tried resisting arrest and chased the Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents with machetes in Quezon City, Thursday.

“They were resisting arrest, even assaulting our Intelligence agents with bladed weapons,” the BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said.

The BI said the foreigners were arrested at Capitol Estate in Diliman, Quezon City, on Wednesday following a mission order issued by Commissioner Jaime Morente upon finding they were illegally staying in the country.

“Thankfully no one got hurt,” BI intelligence division chief Fortunato Manahan, Jr. said in a statement. “The incident shows the risks that we encounter during operations. There was even an instance in the past when one of our men were shot in the performance of our duties.”

Manahan also said many of those arrested were into the “5-6″ money lending racket.

BI said the arrested undocumented Indian nationals had been turned over to the agency’s Legal Division pending deportation proceedings.

“We will not tolerate foreign nationals living and working in the country without proper visas,” Morente said.

“The BI will not rest until all undocumented aliens in the Philippines are hunted down and deported back to their home countries,” he said.
