1Sambayan is a coalition of various organizations formed by Calleja, church people, former Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, former Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales, and former Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario.

On Saturday, Independence Day, the group is set to announce the final list of options for what they hope to see as the opposition’s unified candidate.

“We have the same ideals of, let’s say love of country, respect for the Constitution, respect for rule of law, sanctity of life, defend territorial integrity of the country,” said Calleja.

The big challenge is whether the 1Sambayan stakeholders will be willing to support what the group chooses.

“We understand nothing is written in stone, although me palabra de honor naman di ba, meron namang word of honor and we are happy, ang klaro don mas nananig ang pagmamahal nila sa bayan at ang interes ng bayan kesa personal na interes,” said Calleja.

For political analyst Professor Maria Ela Atienza, it is important that one party not be divided.

Atienza believes that the opposition should also have learned something from their experience in the 2019 senatorial elections when they defeated all the Otso Diretso candidates.

“Hindi rin kasi nakatulong halimbawa sa Otso Diretso ang pagiging anti-Duterte, tinitira nila lagi ang administration at ‘yung presidente, so kailangan din may kongkretong programa sila na maibibigay sa mga tao,”said Atienza.

Calleja earlier said, “We are confident to say that the dream of having one candidate [for the opposition] in 2022 is more possible now than a year ago.”

“Secretary Roque said our voice is as good as one barangay. Yes, we started small, but we are confident and we are growing. By  time,  our voice will be good for thousands of barangays and millions of Filipinos. We will have a united front in 2022, and we will win by majority, not just by plurality,” he added.
