The Philippine National Police is now ready for the IATF to decide to extend the most stringent enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, which is due to end on August 20. It will be recalled that a lockdown was implemented due to the sudden kick-off of cases as the more infectious Delta variant spread.

PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar also stressed that they would strictly enforce the “ban” when it comes to outdoor exercises this ECQ in Metro Manila, which can be done to control the spread of COVID-19.

COVID-19 has already affected 200.29 million people worldwide, according to the latest data from the World Health Organization. Of that number, 4.3 million people died.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health in Region VII has confirmed local transmission of Delta variant in Cebu City.

According to DOH Region VII chief pathologist Dr. Mary Jean Loreche, their data showed two Delta variant COVID-19 patients have no travel history or contacts with Filipinos from other countries.

To date, DOH Region 7 has reported 36 cases of Delta variant.

Loreche added the increase in COVID-19 cases in the region was due to “very open” borders, pandemic fatigue, and the public’s violation of minimum health standards.

Gatherings of fully-vaccinated individuals, especially the young ones, have also contributed to the rise in COVID-19 numbers in the region, Loreche added.
