World famous weaver Narda Capuyan died on March 11. She was 73.

Narda has been lying in state at her home at Winacao Eco-cultural Village, Acop, Tublay, Benguet.

Capayuan won numerous awards in the Philippines and abroad. She served as president of the Narda’s Hand-woven Arts and Crafts Inc. and Narda’s Trading Corp.

She was a native of Besao, Mountain Province. Although a family planning nurse by profession, Capuyan began weaving in 1972, creating blankets from recycled acrylic yarn.

Her hobby encouraged others to follow her lead – creating beautiful textiles rather than babies.

Capuyan is noted for her part in reviving the Cordillera Ikat tradition of designing and dying threads in vibrant colors to suit contemporary tastes.

Narda Capuyan helped create a multi-million dollar business and revivet a fading tradition.
