A 44-year-old women has died after she jumped from the old Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.
“Baby” Johanna Baguio suffered severe injuries after she landed on the concrete footing of a wall supporting the bridge.
Baguio was positively identified by family members, who confirmed she was a mother of four from Lapu-Lapu City. She had been suffering a nervous breakdown for some time, her sister said.
Her sister also said that she suffered epilepsy issues since she was a child and had violent tendencies.
At 2pm yesterday, Baguio went to City Hall to meet her sister Felicitas Baguio, the assistant city treasurer.
She went to City Hall to seek her sister’s help in putting a property up for sale. But Baguio left without a word when her sister went to get her some drinks.
Baguio’s sisters and husband sought the help of Lapu-Lapu City Police Station after fearing for her safety.
Baguio, wearing a yellow shirt and blue pants, was later seen on the concrete footing under the bridge, lying face down.
Onlookers watching the retrieval of the body slowed traffic on the bridge.
At the Mandaue City Hospital, tension erupted between Baguio’s brother and husband.
The old Mandaue-Mandaue Bridge and the Marcelo B Fernan Bridge, both connecting Mactan Island and mainland Cebu, have seen suicide attempts on numerous occasions.
