Three police officers, and two other Filipinos have been arrested by NBI officers over the weekend in connection with the kidnap-murder of a woman found stuffed inside of a plastic barrel and floating in the Pasig River.
Police arrested officer Eljie Jacobe and Mark Ja de los Santos while they were attempting to withdrawal 50,000 pesos from a real estate agent account at an ATM machine – the card belonged to Adora Lazatin, the woman found inside the barrel.
Jacobe was still in uniform when he was arrested at the bank in Bicutan, Parañaque on Saturday.
Authorities discovered that at least 200,000 pesos had been withdrawn from Lazatin’s account.
Lazatin’s husband is a seaman, he cut short his work to identify his wife’s body at MPD.
56-year-old Lazatin had a coiled nylon cord wrapped around her neck – her hands and feet were wrapped in tape as well.
The victim’s passport and debit cards were confiscated from the two police officers – Authorities also confiscated the men’s service guns, pistols, knives, BuCor identification cards and mobile phones.
An investigation shows that Lazatin advertised to sell a property in Las Piñas, and told her son that she was about to meet a prospective buyer, that buyer turned out to be De los Santos.
Laztin’s son reported his mother missing to Las Piñas police after she did not answer to his text messages later that afternoon – the boy decided to check his mother’s bank account online, knowing she had just received 500,000 pesos from the proceeds of several properties she had sold.
The money trail revealed that someone had withdrawn 60,000 pesos from an ATM in Caloocan City – the family then reported the mysterious incident to NBI. Bank officials looked into the matter and discovered a man had withdrawn 50,000 pesos – that man turned out to be De los Santos
NBI deployed over 100 officers to stakeout dozens of ATM machines across four different cities – after 5 days they discovered De los Santos exiting a black Ford Fiesta in Bicutan, Taguig City.
Officers arrested De los Santos after he attempted to escape in his vehicle.
Jacobe and De los Santos confessed to hatching a plan to kidnap Lazatin and hold her for ransom from her family who reside in Molina, Cavite.
They killed the victim after they feared she could identify them – all five suspects will be charged with kidnapping with homicide, as well as violation of the access devices regulation law before the Las Piñas prosecutor’s office
