On this day in history one of the famous Japanese soldiers of all times passed away. Hiroo Onoda died from pneumonia complications in Tokyo, Japan on January 16, 2014.

Renowned as the last Japanese soldier to surrender in the Philippines, Onoda stood his ground on the island of Lubang almost 29 years past his service time. He later surrendered on March 9, 1974, and given a full pardon by President Ferdinand Marcos.
