BI officials confiscated computers, documents, gadgets and other items.

The Philippine Star newspaper quoted NBI-7 Assistant Regional Director Augusto Eric Isidoro as saying the Japanese workers, none of whom were documented, could face charges before the court and might be deported.

If the illegal workers were convicted, they would face up to three years behind bars or a fine.

Website information for Japan Intertrade Call Centre listed only 40 employees.

Company officials said the arrested workers did not need to secure working permits from the Department of Labor (DOLE) as they were six-month internship employees.
