Magnitude six earthquake hits the southern Philippines

A magnitude six earthquake has shaken Lanao Del Sur, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has announced.

The quake struck the municipality of Balindong in Lanao Del Sur at 3.55pm today (Sunday, November 4).

According to a bulletin posted on its website, Phivolcs said the quake was one kilometre northwest of the town with a depth of 617 kilometres. It was of tectonic origin.

No damage has been reported. Aftershocks are expected.

It was one of 20 earthquakes detected by Phivolcs across the Philippines today. The second most powerful hit Surigao Del Sur at 8.49am. It was recorded as magnitude 4.2.
