Estimated 5.2 million people affected by typhoon Ompong

An estimated 5.2 million people have been affected by typhoon Ompong, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported.

These people are living in the 125-km. radius from the projected track of the typhoon, NDRRMC spokesman Edgar Posadas said today (Friday, September 14).

“There was a shift between the most affected province. Yesterday, it was Cagayan with a total of 1.2 million, next was Isabela with 1.19 million but today, Isabela now is the number one projected to be affected with 1.57 million and then the province of Cagayan with 1.2 million,” he said.

He added that 2,298 families, or roughly 9,107 people, were preemptively evacuated from Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

He also noted that some 2,112 evacuation centres had been activated.

Posadas added that affected municipalities are placed at 189 while about 55,700 houses with light walls and roofings have been damaged.

He said the government’s third wave responders are already pre-positioned in Clark Field, Pampanga, and waiting for staging points in the north for possible deployment.

Areas under Signal No. 3 increased from 10 to 13 by this afternoon as Ompong (international name Mangkhut) accelerated closer to northern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

The following areas are placed under Signal No. 3:

  • Cagayan (including Babuyan group of islands)

  • Ilocos Norte

  • Ilocos Sur

  • Apayao

  • Abra

  • Kalinga

  • Mountain Province

  • Ifugao

  • Nueva Vizcaya

  • Quirino

  • Northern Aurora

  • Isabela

The following areas are placed under Signal No. 2:

  • La Union

  • Benguet

  • Pangasinan

  • Tarlac

  • Nueva Ecija

  • Southern Aurora

  • Northern Zambales

The following areas are placed under Signal No. 1:

  • Southern Zambales

  • Pampanga

  • Laguna

  • Quezon incl. Polillo Is.

  • Northern Occidental Mindoro incl. Lubang Is.

Ompong is expected to make landfall over Isabela-Cagayan area by tomorrow morning.

It was moving west northwest at 25kph, maintaining its maximum sustained winds of 205kph and gusts of up to 255kph.

The typhoon was last spotted 470km east of Baler, Aurora.
