With a surprise announcement during a book signing event, Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago revealed her run for president of the Philippines in 2016.
Santiago was coy about her revelation saying: “I cannot say under the law that I will run for president but I am allowed to say that I am running for office.”
When the press pushed her further, she answered: “In so far as I’m concerned I am running for president.
“Definitely I will run because I’ve already gotten over my bout with cancer and there’s nothing left to do.
“I can apply for a job abroad like the one I lost because of my cancer but since I have served the government from the very beginning I will end my career here.”
During the book signing event, Santiago’s staff all wore red shirts with a hashtag logo on back #MIRIAM2016.
During her message to the audience, Santiago said: “If I become president sometime in the very near future, this country will be much better than it was before.
