The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) is launching an ‘anti-baggage theft campaign’ at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

“This is an effort that we are initiating to help the airlines in protecting check-in baggage possibly against their own staff in charge of handling them,” MIAA General Manager Jose Honrado said.

MIAA launched Oplan ”Dukot Bagahe” led by its Intelligence Department. Just this March 26 a night crew member was caught picking through passenger’s baggage before they were loaded into a Korea-bound airliner. He was held after police found one pair of branded sunglasses in his possession.

This led the operative to look into the lockers of five others, they too were found with a gold ring, gold earrings, a G-shock wristwatch, a Seiko wristwatch and three branded pairs of sunglasses.

The group was released until pending further investigation into the matter of stealing from passenger luggage.

“As much as possible let us avoid putting valuable items in your luggage. If it cannot be avoided, do not put them in front pockets and pouches where they can be easily identified by simply feeling them because they become tempting to certain people,” Honrado advised passengers.
