President Duterte has raised his rhetoric to a whole new level, telling an audience of children that he was prepared to eat terrorists.

Addressing the opening of a sports tournament in Antique province, he said he could be “50 times” more brutal than Muslim terrorists such as Abu Sayyaf.

Speaking of the ongoing actions to capture the militants who launched the foiled kidnapping raid on Bohol Island last week, he stated that would prefer them caught dead, rather than alive, as it would save the cost of feeding them.

Describing the terrorists as “animals” he said: “If you want me to be an animal, I’m also used to that. We’re just the same.

“I can dish out, go down what you can 50 times over.” He then said that if a terrorist was presented to him when he’s in a foul mood, “give me salt and vinegar and I’ll eat his liver.”

The crowd broke into nervous laughter, but Duterte cut in, saying: “It’s true, if you make me angry.”

Earlier this month, the president drew criticism for similarly inappropriate remarks to an audience of Boy Scouts. (Read more here)

After being named as the nation’s new Chief Scout, he told the children, some of whom were as young as four: “I am angry. I will kill people if they destroy our youth.

“I am really strict. And they say I kill people. I really kill people if they destroy our children.

“You drug addicts, since you’ve been identified, avoid the streets, stay in your homes because I will throw you in Manila Bay. I’ll make you fertiliser for the fish.”

He then urged the children to be ready to die for their country, saying: “Who wants to be a soldier? Die for their country? I’m depending on that. I’m depending on you to become soldiers.”
