Filipinos are biggest Trump supporters in the world

The Philippines was one of a handful of countries in which more than half of people polled approved of President Trump

Among 37 populations polled worldwide, people in the Philippines are showing the highest support for President Trump.

The findings from the Pew Research Center said some seven in 10 Filipinos had faith in the US president when it came to world affairs.

“Trump’s greatest support in the current poll comes from Filipinos, 69 per cent of whom say they have confidence in the US president,” the report concluded.

This places the Philippines among the ranks of Russia, Ghana, Vietnam, Kenya, Tanzania, Israel and Nigeria — which were the only other countries where more than half of respondents had faith in Trump “to do the right thing regarding world affairs”.

Overall, however, Trump is Pew’s “lowest-scored” president for more than a decade.

“Across the 37 countries surveyed in 2017, a median of only 22 per cent say that they have at least some confidence in Trump to do the right thing regarding world affairs. Almost three-quarters (74 per cent) have little to no confidence in the new US leader,” the report said.

Pew found that 69 per cent of Filipinos thought that the president was “a strong leader,” while 51 per cent described him as “charismatic.”

The Philippines ranks as the second-highest in thinking that Trump is “well-qualified to be president” (67 per cent), behind 71 per cent of Vietnam, which hosted the president on a high-profile visit last month.

Vietnam and the Philippines tied as the two countries who most believe that the president “cares about ordinary people” (71 per cent).

At the other end of the scale, perhaps unsurprisingly, is Mexico.

Pew says two-thirds of Mexico expect tensions to worsen between the two countries during the course of the Trump presidency.

Like every other country except Israel and Russia, the Philippines had a higher regard for President Obama, who was supported by 94 per cent of Filipinos last year.

“In terms of personal characteristics, Trump is seen by most publics around the world as arrogant, intolerant and even dangerous,” the report concluded.
