House Bill #4477, which seeks to legalise marijuana for medicinal purposes, was given a ‘thumbs down’ by the Philippines Medical Association on Thursday.

Of the Specific groups, a formal statement saying “We oppose #4477. We cannot risk endangering the health and safety of the Filipino”. The statement was backed by the following organisations:

  • Philippine Medical Association
  • Philippine College of Physicians
  • Child Neurology Society of the Philippines
  • Group for Addiction Psychiatry of the Philippines
  • Pain Society of the Philippines
  • Philippine League Against Epilepsy, Inc.
  • Philippine Neurological Association
  • Philippine Psychiatric Association
  • Philippine Society of Clinical and Occupational Toxicology
  • UP-PGH National Poison Management and Control Center

Bill #4477 says, marijuana “has been confirmed to have beneficial and therapeutic uses to treat chronic and debilitating diseases or medical conditions.”

Five out of the 10 medical groups proposed the creation of a task force which will review existing policies and explore other options regarding medical marijuana.

The groups also expressed moral and ethical responsibility when ensuring patient safety – they also voiced concerns regarding the benefits of medical marijuana.

The statement read “HB 4477 is contrary to the policy of the state to safeguard the well-being of its citizenry particularly the youth from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs.”
