The Philippine Coast Guard has sent out stern warnings that they have received reports saying the Abu Sayyaf have directed kidnapping threats towards Samal Island and various regions of Mindanao.

At a AFP-PNP press conference on Wednesday, officials said they will meet with the management of the Holiday Oceanview Resort in Samal on Thursday to beef up security.

On September 21 last year, suspected Abu Sayyaf members kidnapped three foreigners and a Filipina at the resort and took them to Sulu.

Officials are now saying that a patrol boat is being assigned to the area near the resort to ensure the safety of the foreign visitors.

Officials also noted that patrol teams have been stationed at Babak District of Samal – they also denied at the press conference that ISIS had infiltrated the region.

Authorities believe the threats may have come to distract or has been talked about to sow fear among military and local citizens.
