“Only in the Philippines,” comes to mind when listening to the mayor of Cebu City and his distrust in dealing with local utility companies that broke the deadline for untangling the spaghetti wires throughout the city.

But, to add insult to injury, the Mayor Rama is now giving those same utility companies a ‘second chance.’

The last deadline was to happen on July 22 – after a meeting this week with the mayor, the utility companies promised to do better, but admitted they only did about 10 per cent of the work requested.

Not only has the companies had three months to complete the problem, they’ve had three more months till the meeting and are now getting their ‘second chance’ to do what exactly?

The mayor has gone so far as threatening to cut down some redundant poles that are rotting and full of ‘spaghetti’ wires.

The mayor says they are redundant poles and are a threat to the safety of the public – however, one has to question the fact that the poles have been like this for years on end, even centuries on end.

In attendance of the meeting this past Friday were Telecphil, Globe Telecom, Visayan Electric Company, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and Catholic Television Network, along with Bayantel.

Cebu City mayor said the utility firms made a commitment, but have admitted to him that only ten percent of the work has been completed.

“You all lied. You promised to get this done by my birthday, and yet you didn’t do it. You really want me to get angry. Our agreement was simple,” Mayor Rama said.

Mayor Rama said that those who do not comply this time around may have their business permits revoked.

The mayor gave the utility firms a whopping 7 months to complete the project or else – so the new deadline will be May 1st, Labor Day and eight days shy of the May 9th national and local elections in the Philippines.
