A 75-year-old woman from Los Angeles was arrested at the NAIA airport for carrying a live .38 caliber bullet in her handbag.
She is the second person this week to be arrested – another passenger was held by airport authorities on Saturday for a bullet in her check-in luggage.
The pensioner was travelling with her son and daughter and was briefly held after members of the Office of Transportation Security claimed to find the bullet – but later left her leave for “humanitarian reasons”.
The lady expressed her surprise at the presence of the bullet, saying she’d packed her bags herself. Meanwhile, her son commented that there must be “some sort of magic” at the airport for the offending item to suddenly appear in her luggage.
Authorities used the “hands-off policy” on the bag, and requested the daughter to remove the bullet from her mother’s luggage. She pointed out her personal connection to a major Canadian newspaper, at which point it was declared that the bullet was in fact an “amulet” and the family were allowed to continue on their journey. The “amulet” was confiscated before the pensioner was allowed to go on her way.
