American detained after saying: “You can’t arrest me, I’m a US citizen”

Before being taken off to the station, the American boasted that he couldn’t be arrested because he was a US citizen

An American was arrested at a Davao City mall after threatening a city councillor — and bragging that he couldn’t be detained because of his nationality.

Gary Joseph Maraviglia flew into a rage yesterday (Sunday, August 6) after accusing Davao City Second District Councillor Al Ryan Alejandre of photographing his credit card.

According to a report on Radio dzBB, the American accused the local politician of attempting to defraud him, and challenged him to a fist fight. Some local news sources also refer to a threat involving a shotgun.

In his complaint filed with police, Mr Alejandre also claimed that Maraviglia boasted that he could not be arrested because he was a US citizen.

Ironically, Mr Alejandre is the chairman of the city government’s international relations and tourism committees.

It has not been confirmed what charges are being filed, and no further information on this case is available at this time.

He must have been hobog 😆

  2. I doubt the American said that as from my experience with some educated Filipinos they like the make inflammatory untruthful statements. As you can see from the headline here “You can’t arrest me, I’m a US citizen”. As I said, I definitely do not believe the Filipino City Councilor.

  3. Sounds like a typical arrogant thing a yank would say and bd dumb enough to believe.

  4. Americans can be arrested, of course. But under Filipino law any and every American arrested requires the arresting authorities to file a full report with the US embassy. Americans ARE different in THAT way.

  5. Dum ameerican cause us an ph have a agreement if americans mess up here they can go to jail or filippino in usa. Same.

  6. The American guy is in the wrong for claiming he can’t be arrested because he is a US citizen and all the threats made, but I am also questioning the action of the councilor. If the American claims are true, why is the councilor taking pictures of the guy’s credit card for? There’s definitely more to the story….

  7. wot happen hu did Joe at or in Davao mall grab shotgun from uniformed gorilla to threaten corrupt scam councilor with ? too bad Joe didn’t get that one once and for all.

  8. LOL @ all the American haters coming out of the woodwork, and confirming their bias with an obvious misquote by the allegedly guilty here. There’s much more to this story, but this guy is likely feeling all the anti-American sentiment, and is quite tired of the BS of daily life here. Throw in an arrogant official operating with impunity, and the American guy’s lack of rights in the situation, and it’s a powder keg waiting to blow up. Unless you want to bend over or get on your knees for the locals, i wouldn’t advise anyone retiring here. Things were great 10 years ago, but today is a different story.
