The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs) received its first “real-time” tsunami warning equipment – capable of accurate, on the spot information.

Donating the equipment was the Japan International Cooperation Agency – the upgrade will give the older ten band motion sensor a boost of 26 additional bands.

The donation also comes with 19 sea-level monitoring stations as well as 240 intensity meters.

The donation is said to be worth over 400 million pesos.

“The project is important not only for Phivolcs but to Filipinos for their safety and resilience from disaster,” Philvolcs Director Renato Solidum said.

In all, the equipment will upgrade the country far above where it stands today.

Much of the equipment will be installed in 2016, making tsunami and earthquake sensitivity a priority to their potential damage or risk to the country.

The new system will also give access to satellite information to regulate the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, which both Japan and the Philippines sit upon.

“Japan and the Philippines share common experiences when it comes to disasters. By sharing technology and experience, JICA would like to continue helping the Philippines prepare better for disasters and other emergencies,” said JICA chief representative in the Philippines, Noriaki Niwa.
