The convoy of the Davao regional police Chief was ambushed in Barangay Badas, Mati City in Davao Oriental on Monday morning. Nobody was hurt.
The ambush came just hours after authorities and suspected communist rebels clashed twice in Mati City.
On Sunday night, about 50 armed men opened fire on the police station in Mati City, prompting the police to fire back, killing in five rebels.
Soldiers arrived later to assist police and then pursued the rebels – three guerrillas were killed and five wounded.
PNP spokesperson Chief Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said the attack on the Mati City police station was sensed early on by policemen.
“They senses the attack so this led to the engagement between the PNP and the lawless armed groups. A firefight ensued, lasting I think for around 15-20 minutes,” he said.
“On the part of the NPA, they withdrew upon seeing that they lost the element of surprise.”
