Philippines Airlines (PAL) is suspending its flight service between Abu Dhabi and Manila from July 8.
PAL — which recently promised “better service and new routes” — said the cancellation of the flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays was part of a “route assessment”.
Earlier this month, we reported how the national carrier had suspended its only trans-Pacific service out of Cebu, a thrice-weekly flight to Los Angeles.
On a potentially brighter note, plans are under discussion to launch direct flights between Abu Dhabi and Davao.
A statement on the airline’s website said: “Philippine Airlines will be temporarily suspending flights to and from Abu Dhabi effective July 8 this year until further notice.
“The temporary cancellation of the service is being carried out as the airline undertakes route assessment initiatives.”
It said it was seeking the “kind understanding of affected passengers as the airline implements these operational adjustments”.
It is thought the suspension could be due to rival airlines — including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways and Cebu Pacific — all offering much cheaper fares.
Passengers holding tickets dated July 8 onwards can choose to either accept a full refund, or fly to Dubai before connecting to Abu Dhabi via a free bus service arranged by PAL.
“Affected passengers are advised to avail of any of these options within 30 days from original flight dates, with rebooking or refunding charges waived,” the airline said.
“Philippine Airlines will also communicate with affected passengers by email notification and call-out. The airline shall inform the public once the service resumes.”
